Build tools that respect small businesses
Most small businesses do not need enterprise software. They need software that removes friction without forcing them to become software operators.
Enterprise fantasy
It is easy to borrow patterns from tools built for IT departments: roles, audit trails, fifty toggles on day one. A five-person shop does not have an admin. They have an owner who also sells, ships, and reconciles the books.
Enterprise fantasy makes demos impressive and adoption slow.
Friction without operator burden
Respectful tools default sensibly, recover gracefully, and explain errors in human language. They do not require a weekly “sync configuration” call. They export what accountants need without a certification course.

Design constraints that help
Sensible defaults over empty setups. Progressive disclosure over sprawling settings. Clear pricing without surprise seats. Support paths that do not assume a dedicated ops hire.
How to apply it
- Watch a non-technical user complete onboarding without help.
- Count clicks to first value; cut anything ceremonial.
- Prefer integrations they already pay for over bespoke portals.
- Say no to features that require you to become their part-time IT.
